This Jar Melo kit turns a simple bit of chemistry into an afternoon of play. Children mix gel powders with water, squeeze the gel into moulds and dip the shapes for fifteen seconds, and over the following one to two hours those shapes swell into soft, colourful fish. The gel is made with natural sodium alginate, which the supplier describes as safe and gentle on little hands. What distinguishes it from an ordinary fishing game is that the child makes the fish first, so the making and the playing are two halves of the same kit, and the creatures carry on being useful afterwards as ring decorations, scooped with the net, or arranged into glowing display bottles.
